Now we see things imperfectly . . .

Donnie is a young person, had no health problems before his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer stage IV, and has lots of love in his life, so apparently he is writing his own book of expectations while he continues to be on this earth.  God certainly has a plan and a purpose for the timing of his homegoing . . .  I Corinthians 13:12                                                                                               New International Version
For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.  Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.  All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.

The Hospice doctor and nurse came to see Donnie at home on Friday.  We discussed some of his issues, and they brainstormed and came up with solutions.  Donnie has been agitated despite medications to control it, so we added Valium to his regime.  That has really seemed to help him.  We also increased his Dilaudid bolus.  I am so grateful for the doctor coming out and “putting eyes” on Donnie to trouble shoot problems and find new solutions.

Although Donnie has not had anything to eat in 5 days now, and is only taking sips of water with his crushed medications, he continues to occasionally get up and stand at the side of the bed and attempt to talk to us.  Such a strong constitution and desire to live.  It boggles the practical and intellectual mind.  I keep thinking it is his love of others that keeps him strong and determined.

Yesterday morning Donnie was able to tell Jeff (son) that he loves him, and then he told me later in the afternoon.  These are very cherished moments.  Of course he is heavily sedated and sleeping the grand majority of the day and night now, so these moments are few and far between.

He is currently on 24 mg of Dilaudid an hour, with boluses of 18 mg every 10 minutes.  This is a total of 132 mg of Dilaudid an hour.  He still really appreciates getting his head massaged and washed.  Our family is with him 24/7, and we are all amazed he can communicate with us AT ALL due to his medication requirements to manage his pain and agitation.

I cannot begin to tell you how amazing it is to have the support of our children, siblings and parents during this time.   There are usually  3-8 family members with me throughout each day, helping Donnie through the day and night.  They allow me to get much needed rest.  Truly, what a blessing to us!  What a comfort!!

Several of our precious friends have been bringing us meals to help us through this time.  I truly cannot tell them how much it has meant to us!!  The love and prayers that go along with that food help to hold us up when we are weary are cherished.  We are so blessed!!!

Please continue to pray for pain management, agitation management, and strength for Donnie’s caregivers.  We continue lean on God, and know that he has us wrapped in his everlasting arms.  Please continue to pray for Donnie’s comfort during this time.

Oh Tina. I just have to share something with you. Do you know just how precious you are to us all. You have shared such intimate details of Donnie's Homegoing. God be praised. Another beautiful saint, going home.I just participated in Beth Moore's study Entrusted. The last week of the study was today. Beth ended the study with I Cor. 13.When you think of the assurance of our hope, that Paul was expressing as he was writing this final letter, knowing his fate, to the fledgling Christians who faced such trials, and he wanted them to be strong in their faith, and comforted in their spirit. Your testimony takes me back to Hawaii, where I was stationed when my Dad died. He would have good moments and mom would call me and I would be able to talk with him. All he would say, and he said it over and over, was I love you. I want to believe that there is a special angle assigned to each of us to escort us to Jesus, whom we shall then indeed see "face to face". What a wonderful comforting scripture for us to dwell on during a time like this. I am thankful with you that you have the help you need. God is good, and will cradle Donnie in his arms, today and always. I love you dearly cousin.

I drove by your house and saw all the cars in your driveway and knew there was lots of love sitting under your roof all at once 🙂 We are so happy your family is able to all be together at this time. We send our prayers and love as always.

God bless you all. This sounds so familiar, except Donnie is blessed to be at home, with plenty of company. We could see Jim's decline, but the formation of the blood clot set it on fast forward. So, I've not had much of a sense of closure. I am truly glad for you to have those cherished moments, within circumstances that are of your choosing. Doesn't make it a cake walk, but I can see, through your posts, the comfort it gives.  And yes, I do pray for you guys.

Donnie I am praying for you and your family constantly. I love you brother. It's such a blessing to know that you have our Lord Jesus as your savior. It gives me a lot of comfort to know this. You stay strong my friend. 

Mine and Diane's hearts are with you as we reflect on our very similiar journey with our son Mat. When i read all that is happening it brings so many emotions that i could not tell you. I do want to say that even as we trust in the Lord that there are very difficult days in which we question his death and we hurt unbelievably, time allows us to cope and live, but nothing replaces the loss but God' love and the closeness of family and friends.

Praying for all needs at this time! Grateful for God's mercy in giving you all these moments with Donnie!! Our love and prayers are unending!!

Tina,

I understand completely.  God is our refuge and strength.  He's with us constantly.  What a Mighty God we serve! We're seeing God's strength and love in you, Donnie and all your family.  

My sons, Greg, Jeff and myself pray every day for each of you and Donnie.  He was always encouraging to us as a nurse and friend.  He would sing to Greg as he attended him in ICU and played music.  What a ministry that was.  

Tell Donnie we love him and that Greg is now lifting his right arm very slowly from it being dropped down by his side; up and over to his stomach. Four and a-half years ago when he had the brain stem bleed, he could hardly move his thumb.

Thank you Tina for your faithfulness to keep us informed.  I have only met you once at W.P. Hospital when Donnie was first admitted, but through your messages of Donnie, I fill as I have known you forever.
